Chapter Three

The next day longing started in Anna from the moment she woke up in her Seattle apartment. Rain dribbled down the outside of her bedroom window, the nip in the air a distinct change from the heat of the Southwest and cowboy country. She crawled from bed, logging the faint aches in her body after a good session of lovin’. She frowned at the idea then dismissed it when she realized she’d probably flexed and stiffened in all the right places during her time in the Reality Suite. That would account for the sensual aches and pains. She was half tempted to go right back to work and let herself into the Reality Suite so she could play the same game again. Unexpectedly she’d developed a huge yearning for long, lean cowboys with wicked grins.

Although one would do the trick, and if she must choose, she’d pick Dante. She’d really liked Dante.

“Fool,” she muttered as she shuffled over the chilly kitchen tiles to start the coffeemaker. “It was a game.” Yeah, you should be out with your girlfriends and then you might actually meet a man. Chances of the right male coming along in groups of three were small to none.

Ten minutes later, she stared into the depths of her coffee mug. Like a heat-seeking missile her mind went straight back to the hot sex with Dante, Gabriel and Cayle. A groan erupted as the sensible part of her mind realized she was in danger of obsessing about a stupid game. No, not stupid since being in on the development of the software would earn her a good chunk of change. The longing to dive into the game again just to run her hands over Dante—that was the idiotic part.

Yet only three hours after her first cup of coffee, she found herself pulling up in the empty employee parking lot dressed in jeans and a nice shirt along with boots. She’d even brought her Stetson. She signed in with security who were used to her and the other programmers coming and going at all hours.

“This is a sickness.” Her voice echoed weirdly in the corridor leading to their computer lab, openly mocking her fixation with visiting imaginary men in a fantasy world.

In the control booth, her fingers danced across the keyboard. She pulled up the game setting she’d saved and advanced one day to the rodeo. It would be fun to experience something new but the game would utilize the same characters and setting.

Satisfied the programming was correct, she sucked in a deep breath and opened the door into the gaming room.

“Welcome to the Kerrinsberg Rodeo!” a voice boomed through a loud speaker.

The crowd cheered and applauded as horses cantered around the arena, their riders bearing flags of rodeo nations. Dust rose into the air, the excitement about the coming events palpable. Anna took possession of the nearest empty seat and glanced at the people sitting around her. As she’d expected several of the faces were familiar because she’d taken note of them the previous night.
